earlier today there was a cloture vote on chuck hagel. this is essentially what we knew last week is that republicans were going to hold up the eventual askengs of chuck hagel to become defense secretary in case there was anything in his past that could damn him. seven days later apparently there's nothing in his past so they're comfortable moving forward. he's expected to be confirmed probably within the next five minutes. you can even have it in this block if we're so fortunate. >> does that not prove that the whole nonsense around the nomination process on this man was simply invented? it was theatrics. there was no substance. it's the same as the friends of hamas. shall are they? >> reporter: i think it does show that the republican strategy was to try to bloody him as much as possible with the belief if they were able to do it enough he would perhaps withdraw. he was pretty vehement last week he would not withdraw. now with the sequester looking like it's going to go forward, my calculations there's $46 billion in military cuts over

if senator hagel becomes secretary of defense, the military option will have zero credibility. i'm sorry, ari, can you remind me how many purple hearts lindsey graham, ted cruz, and marco rubio have between them? >> i think it's zero. >> zero. >> i think it's zero. and i think that the problem with that letter goes deeper than just their sort of shallow criticisms of chuck hagel. the military option is decided in our democracy by the korng working with the president to decide if and when to declare war. so that substantive attempt at a critique acts as if the secretary of defense is going to decide it all along. >> the critique is a complete falsehood. >> whether he is hawkish or not, the president will set the goals of the policy, but the declaration of war against iran or an authorization of force would come from the congress. there's something else that toure said that i thought was important and it almost got lost in the flurry of hoorayish -- toure yish hand motions. you said something that really struck a chord with me. you talked about intellectual gerrymandering and i t

ryan, listen to jay carney taking questions about chuck hagel and benghazi. here he is. >> what is unfortunate here is the continuing attempt to politicize an issue, in this case through nominees that themselves had nothing to do with benghazi, and to do so in a way that only does harm to our national security interests. >> so, ryan, just remind me again of what benghazi has to do with chuck hagel's nomination. >> well, nothing. and -- >> sorry, could you repeat that? >> it's -- >> sorry, repeat that, ryan. what does it have -- what does benghazi have to do with chuck hague snel. >> absolutely nothing. it's kind of like why would you take foreign policy advice from dick cheney. after the crash of '29, herbert hoover kept coming to republican conventions and giving these big speeches every four years, and every time he did it, democrats just celebrated because it reminded the entire country of how they got to where they are. so i would assume that democrats would actually encourage dick cheney, keep coming on television, keep giving the american people advice,

the debate on chuck hagel is not over. it has not been serious. we don't have the information we need, and i am going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through. i'm going to hit you and keep hitting you. you're not going to get away with not answering basic questions. >> dana, isn't the problem here not just the fact that benghazi has nothing to do with chuck hagel but the people like senator graham have now put themselves in a position where they cannot stand down because of the rhetoric and the grandstanding that we've seen over the last month? >> martin, i was in the first row of that press son frens when lindsey graham was talking and i thought he was going to leap out and start hitting us in the press corps. absolutely he can't back down. he said i guaran-damn-tee you, was how he put it. it sounds like john mccain and some others given to next week will do it. in a larger picture we're talking about perhaps a week and then hagel will continue on as before. that doesn't mean it's a good thing that there's been a filibuster of a national se

a senate committee scheduled to vote on the nomination of chuck hagel tomorrow. senator john mccain says, i will not participate in any walkout of tomorrow's committee vote, which i guess is what counts for statesmanship among republicans these days, but as to whether mr. mccain will support his one-time friend, well, that remains a bit of a mystery. >> we've still got some more information. >> are you going to support him for defense secretary? >> i will see the rest of the answers to his questions, but certainly i have very grave concerns. i think we need some more information. >> of course, senator lindsey graham brings up an excellent point, one i'm sure more republicans will soon be asking, why stop at chuck hagel? >> i don't think we should allow brennan to go forward for the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed as secretary of defense until the white house gives us an accounting. yes, i'm going to ask my colleagues just like they did with john bolten, joe biden said no confirmation without information. no confirmation without information. >> right. i me

he's handling the fight over chuck hagel. it looks like hagel, despite the sort of abuse he got yesterday will be confirmed. but then it's also jack lew. we have heard that may be contentious, john brennan. steven chu announced he's stepping down. that's another opening to fill. not to mention susan rice's. at some point how much of a distraction are these fights and how much political capital do they eat up that sort of takes away from some of these policy things we're talking about? >> well, it's always a risk and it's become obviously a bigger deal in recent years and this is one of the reasons why i think rice stepped out of the running there because she didn't want to become a distraction. obviously any post that has to be filled up will eat up a little bit of your capital, but tames there are a lot of issue that is can't be ignored. the sequestration battles and unlike julian, i do kind of think that's a difference between the gun and the immigration battle in that republicans themselves really want this immigration iss
